10 Essential Sound Design Blogs

December 8th, 2009

We’d like to share with you some of our favorite blogs and online resources. We read these regularly as they bring us innovative ideas and entertaining information about the sound design world.

Are there others you would like to share with us? We would love to hear about them, so please give us the heads up in the comments.

In no particular order, here they are:

Designing Sound

This is a must if you’re into sound design. Designing Sound is a great place to get all the latest info on sound design for film, games and animation through fantastic interviews, tutorials, resources and much more. Miguel Isaza is switched on, and provides a great read.

The Music of Sound

Tim Prebble, a sound designer based in New Zealand, has got one of the most indispensable blogs on sound design. It is fantastic! He really knows what he talks about, and best of all he shares all his discoveries. He even has an online mentorship program. As Tim says, this blog is a space where he shares with us his obsession with vibrating air molecules.

Unidentified Sound Object

A very interesting blog that looks at sound design from an array of perspectives ranging from sound for film to electroacoustics. The writers of U.S.O, Matteo Milani and Federico Placidi, are not just bloggers but also sound artists and performers.

Soundworks Collection

Film Sound Daily

FSD is packed with great interviews and sound design analysis of many films. Unfortunately, it isn’t being updated very often anymore, but hopefully it will pick up again soon. Their archive still contains a wealth of knowledge and is definitely worth rummaging through.

Filmsound.org

This is a classic. I may be totally wrong, but I think this might have been one of the first online sound design resource of it’s kind. Regardless, I’m pretty sure that most of us have read up and learned from Sven Carlsson’s website. If you haven’t, then definitely go explore.

Mix Magazine online

There is pretty much everything you need to know about the industry. They have not only got their blog, but also podcasts, interviews, gear reviews, tutorials and a ton more.
